The Alfa Romeo Timeline
The Beginning (1910-1920): Alfa Romeo was founded in 1910 in Milan, Italy, as "Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili" (ALFA). The company initially produced cars, engines, and aircraft engines.
Racing Success with a rename (1920s): In the 1920s, Alfa Romeo became known for its racing success, winning numerous races and championships. Drivers like Tazio Nuvolari and Enzo Ferrari helped to establish the company's reputation for high-performance vehicles. Additionally the company was rescued from bankruptcy by a group of Italian investors, and it was renamed "Alfa Romeo".
Expansion and Merger (1930s): In the 1930s, Alfa Romeo expanded its product line to include luxury cars and commercial vehicles. Additionally the company also merged with Italian car manufacturer, Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID), to form Alfa Romeo Società Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (Alfa Romeo SA).
Great things to come (1950's): The 1950s were an important decade for Alfa Romeo. In 1950, Alfa Romeo introduced the 1900, a mid-size family car that became the company's first post-war mass-produced model. In 1954, Alfa Romeo introduced the Giulietta, a small sports car that would go on to become one of the company's most iconic models. In 1958, Alfa Romeo won the Formula One World Championship with the 158, a car that had been developed in the 1930s and had been continually updated and improved over the years.
Turbulent Times (1960s-1980s): In the 1960s and 1970s, Alfa Romeo struggled financially and was acquired by the Italian government. The company continued to produce new models such as the Giulia, but quality issues and labor disputes plagued production. In the 1980s, Alfa Romeo was sold to Fiat, which invested heavily in new models and production facilities.
Modern Era (1990s-present): In the 1990s and 2000s, Alfa Romeo introduced several new models, including the 156, 147, and GTV. The company also returned to motorsports, competing in the World Touring Car Championship and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters. In recent years, Alfa Romeo has focused on producing stylish, high-performance vehicles like the Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio SUV.
